Dairy production builds on a licence to produce. This social contract is increasingly strained by citizens’ and consumers’ concerns about ecological (environmental) and ethical (welfare) issues such as methane and other greenhouse gas emissions as well as cow-calf separation and other management procedures. Following decades of research and rich empirical experience, transition cow health is far from optimal, resulting in reduced welfare and productivity and increased antimicrobial use. Hence, there are ample opportunities for veterinarians to become vital collaborators in building a socially acceptable and sustainable dairy production. At the same time, the veterinary profession is challenged internationally by difficulties in both recruiting and keeping practitioners.
It’s time to revisit the fundamentals...
